    G-S-T Review…Ready Player One

Sometimes, movies and stories speak to us on a level that is hard to comprehend or even put into words. Cinematic experiences can dazzle and inspire or, on the contrary, confound and confuse us. But if done well, the trip is worth taking again and again. To some it’s art, to others it’s escapism, but a break from reality is one thing – the desire to live in that reality is quite another. So enter Steven Spielberg whose resume reads largely of some of the finest and impacting films in cinema history. Some of his films are so cherished and captivating that fans would do anything be ‘in’ right along…

    G-S-T Review…Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

After four decades, it’s possible that some Star Wars fans probably didn’t expect significant new yarns could be spun in the universe they love so much. Well, with Rogue One, Gareth Edwards and company crafted the mother of all lead-ins to that tale which took place a long time ago. That’s right. In case you hadn’t heard, Rogue One happens right before Episode IV. So it’s a really bold move leaning a modern story up against the crawl that started it all. While the prequels are something that (increasingly, and over time) many fans wish hadn’t happened, there are some redeeming elements to those films. As such, Rogue One serves…

Sweet (Teaser) Trailer…’Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’

This week is a good week if you’re a Star Wars fan. The Force Awakens hit Blu-Ray on Tuesday (read our review here) and now we have the first trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Barring the fact the title is a little goofy, director Gareth Edwards looks to be bringing the goods in a major way. One important item to note is that this will be a prequel set before A New Hope, so that should make for an interesting premise…even if this is another Star Wars story involving the Death Star. Anyway, it looks terrific. Enjoy the first teaser trailer for Edwards’ film below! “Rogue One takes place before…

    G-S-T Review…Black Sea

Not your typical January fare in the least, Kevin Macdonald’s Black Sea is an intense, claustrophobic, and exhausting ride. It’s not often we get submarine films and this one is, very easily, among the best of them. Blending heart-pounding tension with a fair bit of humor and wit, the story is a high-seas heist film that echoes Aliens about much as it does Ocean’s 11. But be prepared, this is not a rollicking adventure, it’s a pensive thriller. This British film will leave you both shaken and stirred. Further, admission gets you the whole seat, but you’ll only need the edge. Even at the bottom of the sea, with things, at times, going…

Video Interview…Director Kevin Macdonald on the Intensity and Authenticity of ‘Black Sea’

Kevin Macdonald (The Last King of Scotland) takes the helm for Focus Features’ ultra-tense submarine thriller Black Sea. Part heist film, part white-knuckle thrill ride, Kevin’s film is as engaging as it is claustrophobic. We got to sit with Macdonald to talk about the story and his experiences shooting the film. Now one thing to note, before every interview there’s always a little down time during the tech check. So I decided to drop an impromptu Russian accent on the unsuspecting director when the camera crew were adjusting the curtains behind him. Not sure it will help me obtain a part in Black Sea 2, but it sure got a…

    Sweet Trailer…’Black Sea’

Jude Law wowed film fans this year in Dom Hemingway, Richard Shepard’s hilarious story about a retired safe-cracker. It really was the role of a lifetime for Law (check out our review here). But now, his next film finds him playing a character just as complex only far less animated. In Black Sea, Law plays a rogue submarine captain who, with a crew as reckless as he, is searching the depths of the titular Black Sea for sunken treasure. Sounds good to us, but if you’re not convinced, have a look at the first trailer below… A suspenseful adventure thriller directed by Academy Award winner Kevin Macdonald, centering on a rogue submarine…

Tribeca Film Acquires British Drama ‘Starred Up’

Tribeca Film recently announced it had acquired North American rights to Scottish director David Mackenzie’s award-winning gritty prison drama Starred Up, which stars Jack O’Connell (“Skins”, Angelina Jolie’s upcoming Unbroken), Ben Mendelsohn (The Dark Knight Rises, The Place Beyond the Pines), and Rupert Friend (“Homeland”). Starred Up is about ultra-violent 19-year-old Eric (O’Connell), who is prematurely transferred to the same adult prison facility as his estranged father (Mendelsohn). As his explosive temper quickly finds him enemies in both prison authorities and fellow inmates — and his already volatile relationship with his father is pushed past the breaking point — Eric is approached by a volunteer psychotherapist (Friend), who runs an anger…

Ohhh, Look…Theatrical Poster For Cianfrance's 'The Place Beyond the Pines'

Derek Cianfrance’s Blue Valentine was not an easy film to get through. That affecting anti-romantic story was a devastating look at love and loss and couldn’t have felt any more uncomfortable or real if they tired. His follow up The Place Beyond the Pines, similarly starring Ryan Gosling, got a lot of buzz at the Toronto Film Festival last year and we have to say that the trailer looked impressive. Well the first official poster has been released and it sports the gritty tone of Cianfrance’s film. Have a look… This multi-generational film follows motorcycle stunt rider (Gosling) who turns to robbing banks as a way to provide for his lover (Mendes) and their newborn…
