The holiday season is a great time to get together (safely!) with friends and family. And while the theaters are hurting, there’s still plenty of content hitting streaming platforms that we can enjoy with one another. One such title is the Ashley Avis penned/directed revamp of the classic novel by Anna Sewell which premiered exclusively on Disney+ on November 27. Guillaume Roussel was tapped to bring a fresh sound to Black Beauty. His palette was predominately the piano, but he added to it with a plenty of instruments including a dulcimer and other folkloric sounds/motifs. The result is a warm, heart-felt score that also becomes a bit of a travelog…

Off the Shelf…Disney’s ‘Descendants’
Disney’s latest foray in to live-action entertainment finds the studio dipping back into their vault, but they pull out something entirely unexpected and quite inspired. The alluring conceit in this original feature finds the most evil (and popular) villains from Disney lore have long since been exiled far from present-day Auradon where King “Beast” (from Beauty and the Beast) and Belle are getting ready to allow their son to give his first royal decree. What he says surprises them as he plans to give the exiled kids, who have done nothing wrong, a chance to grow up in Auradon. It’s true, they may be innocent, as it is their parents…

Sweet Trailer…'Escape From Tomorrow'
Scuttlebutt on Escape From Tomorrow started brewing during this year’s Sundance Film Festival, so those of you with your ears to the ground have probably been waiting for the most unusual Disney film of 2013 for quite some time. What makes Randy Moore’s picture so unique, though, is that Disney contributed nothing to its production save for location; Moore shot the entirety of his vision firmly within the bounds of both Disneyland and Disney World, and without securing a word of permission from the Mouse House. Is that dangerous? Not really. Is it subversive? Oh yes. And that’s what’s pulling attention to Escape From Tomorrow: that anarchic, guerrilla spirit. In…

G-S-T Review…Planes
There’s no doubt that Disney is a marketing juggernaut. It’s almost impossible to imagine a world without Mickey Mouse and his friends. That being said, not every Disney movie is a huge box office hit. Disney capitalizes on successful films by making follow-on films as direct-to-disc movies. It’s hard to know the criteria that is used to determine if a film should be direct-to-disc, but you typically know one when you see one. Whatever the case may be, Disney has all corners of the market covered. The latest entry in the Disney collection, Planes, almost went direct-to-disc as well. With that in mind, how will Planes fair with moviegoers? Keep…

Off the Shelf…'Wreck-It Ralph'
Disney and director Rich Moore’s fantastic arcade themed adventure blazes to life on this solid 3D Blu-Ray release. Had you not seen this fun filled adventure in theaters, along with the now Oscar-winning short film Paperman, and manage to see Wreck-It Ralph blind and with no knowledge of its source of origination, you might be inclined to credit the film to Pixar. And while that wouldn’t be an unreasonable guess, you’d be wrong. Ralph has all the bearings of Pixar at its finest, yet Rich Moore’s first feature length effort comes to us from none other than the Mouse House itself. Arriving six months after the release of Brave, Ralph gives weight to the theory that both…
