Interview…Director William Eubank on Realism, Rawness and Relationships in ‘Land of Bad’

Looking at the calendar, we’re just now into February. But after seeing William Eubank’s latest actioner you’d think we were deep in the Summer season where high-octane films are typically blowing up cinema screens. So that speaks highly of Eubank’s film as well as the state of entertainment these days – no matter where you look, you’re going to find something to surprise you or knock your socks off. Land of Bad is a taut film about drone warfare, but Eubank and co-writer David Frigerio make this more about character than technology. It’s an exercise in ramping up tension. Moreover, it tells the unique relationship between two soldiers working on…

Interview…Justin Kurzel on the Madness and Magnificence of ‘True History of the Kelly Gang’

One of the most remarkable films to be released this year is, without a doubt, True History of the Kelly Gang. Directed by Aussie filmmaker Justin Kurzel, and adapted from the book by Peter Carey, the film is an acting tour de force. Full stop. It’s also an amazing piece of filmmaking. Much like the film’s protagonist, anti-hero, outlaw, Kurzel makes his own rules. From the first frame everything about the production is bespoke. We liked the film quite a bit because it’s different, but you do need to get through it all to really appreciate it. It’s very Kubrickian in that there is nothing conventional about the story/characters, cinematography,…

    G-S-T Review…The Nice Guys

Whatever narrative nugget come from the mind of Shane Black, it is most likely guaranteed to be gold – comedic, dramatic, or something in between. Given that this hilarious detective yarn seems culled from any number of buddy cop films, or seminal TV shows, The Nice Guys is an uproarious outing, and one that allows Black to prove that what’s old is new again. Filmmakers can fall into a rhythm (or a rut) where they more or less make the same movie. The Nice Guys seems familiar, but Black is able to make this different by making it what he wants it to be. That does however mean a few too many…

Sweet (Red Band) Trailer…’The Nice Guys’

If you love Shane Black‘s work (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Iron Man 3, et al) then you are going to freak out at the awesomeness of his latest buddy flick The Nice Guys. The film is a throwback romp starring Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe, and holy hell, this looks hilarious! While this isn’t the re-teaming of Robert Downey, Jr. and Val Kilmer that fans have been looking for, this actually seems to be a better looking story. Trailers pushing the 3:00 mark tend to give a lot away, but it’s safe to say that this glimpse into Black’s next endeavor is just the tip of the iceberg…and this particular…

    Sweet Trailer…Darren Aronofsky's 'Noah'

How does Russell Crowe top playing Maximus, Robin Hood and even the Father of the Man of Steel? Well there’s really only one way. He’s gotta go back, way back, like old testament. After lots of anticipation and some news of production woes (what HUGE feature doesn’t have them?) we’re finally getting to see the epic vision for Darren Aronofsky’s Noah starring Crowe as the Biblical hero. This is supposed to be a mammoth production, without question the biggest film Aronofsky has ever tackled, and filled with painstakingly rendered CGI animals. A lot of what we’re seeing is quick cuts, basically an extended teaser, but it looks sensational. Enjoy! In Aronofsky’s…

    G-S-T Review…Man of Steel

Well, now, here’s a fine how do you do: Zack Snyder made a good movie. Granted, he’s made good movies before, but it’s been so long since he released his hyper-muscular remake of Dawn of the Dead that seeing him output something that’s actually watchable from start to finish comes off as something of a shock. In the intervening years, he’s made films containing individual sequences worthy of the praise they rightfully receive but which lack a top-to-bottom sense of cohesion; Sucker Punch inadvertently celebrates the male gaze it tries to critique, and Watchmen is at its best in its first twenty minutes, after which the story begins and the…
